VIME conference-call meeting 29th June 2015

Attendees:
Michele Saad
Quan Huynh-Thu
Phil Corriveau
Eric Hale
Ramesh Jaladi

Agenda:
1. VIME Flickr database
2. VIME studies
3. Next F2F meeting preparation

Discussions:

1. VIME Flickr database:
- The database contains 234 photos so far.
- Currently no specific requirements so images span a wide range of subjects
- Would be nice to have more photos of same scene taken (1) with same camera but different settings and (2) with different cameras. Quan posted examples of same scene (or very similar) taken with two different cameras. But it would be nice to have photos taken by more than two cameras.
- One idea is to publish photography briefs regularly, e.g. once a month. A brief asks contributors to target a more specific image category or content, e.g. night scene, movement, nature/plants, still objects, narrow depth of field, buildings...
- First brief could be: outdoor night scene or low-light
- As the database grows, we should think about a systematic way of organising the photos into categories or properly tagging them. We may need some form of review periodically.
- Ensure that photos are properly tagged: as we send out a photography brief, we can suggest tags to use for this image category
- Another idea is to organise photography sessions during some of the VIME sessions at the next F2F meeting: we can agree in advance on some briefs, ask VQEG meeting attendees to bring along a camera and take advantage that many people will be at the same place at the same time to photograph some specific scenes with different cameras. Additionally, we could also use the social event to photograph night scenes.

2. VIME studies:
- Proposal to run an aesthetic quality study: run small study on a subset of images, rate image quality vs. rate image aesthetics, and investigate how these two aspects correlate. Investigate attributes of aesthetic quality. How do we define aesthetic quality?

3. Next F2F meeting preparation left for discussion at upcoming VIME meetings.
